The Honda Civic is one of the most well-known vehicles on sale today. With 10 generations of this compact car, Honda continues to build and develop a car that just gets better and better. This current generation of the Civic has been on the market since 2016 so Honda thought it was time for a slight update. For the 2020 model year, the family of Civic’s have all received slight updates of their exterior designs. The hatchback version will now have the option of a manual transmission on the Sport and Touring models. In previous years, that gearbox choice was reserved just for the Sport trim. Additionally, the hatchback will now have the 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto equipped as standard.

For today’s review, the keys to the Coupe Si are in my pocket. This is the most powerful and driving-focused version of the sedan and the coupe. It comes with a turbocharged 1.5L four-cylinder engine with 205 horsepower and 192 lb/ft of torque, paired exclusively with the six-speed manual gearbox. The Si is firmer, faster, and much more alert than its regular sedan and coupe counterparts but for those looking for the most hardcore versions of the Civic, you’ll have to turn to the Type R, the 306 horsepower hot hatchback. The Si has a more aggressive look inside and out to distinguish itself as a performance-orientated car. The wide spoiler and the center-mounted exhaust simply epic. These pieces are the most notable elements of the Si design. The interior of the Si benefits from different materials on the door cards, center armrest, and seats. The race-inspired front seats are covered in red stitching and the Si badges on the headrest. The front seats are placed perfectly on the scale with comfort at one end and restraint at the other. Long-distance highway driving is easy for the driver to move freely and allow the seat to breathe, but when pushing the Si up a twisty mountain road, the side bolstering keeps the driver in place to focus on the road ahead. Best of both worlds.

Driving the Si is a joy in any environment. The suspension is set up for communicating the road surface without being overly rough on uneven pavement. The manual transmission is one of the best on sale today with short throws and closely set slots. The clutch is immediately clear on its bite-point and how much throttle it wants from the driver. Driving the Coupe Si was trouble-free with excellent visibility and well-managed turbocharging.

Today’s review focused on the Coupe Si but all of the new 2020 Civic’s are now on display at Calgary Honda. Check out the refreshed lineup of Honda’s compact car by visiting their showroom on Lake Fraser Drive!
